Students and staff did everything they could do to be out of sight in precaution that there was a threat in the building. Looking back on the incident a day later, there was a little bit of confusion amongst everyone in the building.
“There is a 27 year old dude with a gun on the third floor,” one student said. “There was a scary call made to the office,” said another. The whole situation was understandably scary and confusing.
The Portage Police Department later posted a statement that there was just a call made to the school and surrounding schools with threats to the building. Region Source News said that Valparaiso High School has been receiving threatening calls since January 9th.
Since the first call was made, “investigators have worked exhaustively to identify and locate a suspect,” Region News Source said.
To clear up any confusion after the traumatic situation all of the schools in the Porter County area might have, the calls were made by a 16 year old in Ohio. He is currently in custody and may face heavy charges for the threats he made.
Portage High School’s head principal, Mr. Stills, would like to thank students and staff for remaining “calm and collective.” The fast and responsible response all students at PHS had to this very serious situation is appreciated since it is meant to keep everyone safe.
