The Portage High School wrestling teams are about to start their 2024/2025 season. In anticipation for a big season, including the first for the girls wrestling team, Coach Acuna shared some insight into the upcoming season.
What are you most looking forward to in this season?
“What I’m most looking forward to in this season is having the luxury of having a front row seat and behind the scenes look at the process of young men and women working towards their individual goals for the season. Along with seeing a group of young people come together to have a successful team. And the privilege to be one of the guiding factors for them within it all.”
How has the pre-season training been going?
“Pre-season was great. The number of participants have increased from last year and having the expertise of the new Strength & Conditioning coach, Coach Nelson, have really helped improve key physical aspects our athletes need with power, speed, and explosiveness.”
What is an important aspect about wrestling?
“Mental toughness I think is the most important aspect of wrestling. And what I mean by that is, maintaining self-confidence within struggle/perceived failure, having gratitude for the pressure-filled opportunities you will experience and for the hard things that you have to go through to potentially succeed, and remaining self-disciplined to the goals you have set.”
Are there any changes you have implemented to ensure a successful season?
“No major changes have been made; it’s more so just refinements to things like strength training, wrestling movement related conditioning, and athleticism development.”
Is there any other information you would like to share?
“Wrestling has been an athletic backbone for the community and school system of Portage. Everyone should come out to support boys and girls wrestling this season.”
