The Math department is making significant strides to improve student learning and ensure academic success. Under the leadership of Caleb Grim, the department chair, innovative teaching strategies and technology integration are at the forefront of their initiatives.
One of the most noble developments recently is the implementation of a co-teaching model among various groups of math teachers at PHS.
Grim explains, “We have implemented a co-teaching model among different groups of math teachers to provide students with additional support inside and outside of the classroom. Currently, we have our three Algebra 1 teachers working together in each other’s classrooms and our Honors math teachers working in each other’s classrooms.”
This collaborative approach allows educators to share different insights and resources, ultimately creating a more supportive learning environment for students.
In addition to the collaborative teaching model, the Math Department is embracing technology to enhance the educational experience. The primary tool being utilized is MathXL, an online homework resource that provides immediate feedback to students.
Grim discusses the importance of this technology stating, “The ability to use technology to provide students with immediate feedback for their work can be of great benefit.” Furthermore, the incorporation of the online Desmos graphing calculator allows students to visualize mathematical concepts dynamically, making learning more interactive.
A significant goal for the Math Department is to improve the school’s SAT pass rate. To support this objective, specific classes in Geometry and Algebra 2 have been designated as “Test Readiness” sections. These courses are tailored to provide targeted instruction that prepares students for the SAT, ensuring they have the skills and confidence needed to succeed.
Through Collaborative teaching, the integration of technology, and focused test preparation, the Math Department is actively working to enhance the educational experience for all students. As these initiatives continue to unfold, the department remains committed to creating an environment where every student can thrive and be successful in their own journey with mathematics. A huge shoutout to Mr. Grim, the dedicated Department chair, and the entire Math Department for their unwavering commitment to student success, with a special thanks to Mr. Witkowski for being an inspiring and dedicated Math teacher.
