Portage High School is mourning the loss of beloved secretary, Mrs. Brandy Manville, who tragically lost her life in late November. Described as a “bright light” who was there for everyone no matter what they needed, Manville is remembered not only for her dedication to students, staff, the Portage community, and her beloved family, but also her vibrant and positive personality.
“One of my favorite memories of her was when she would say that a tutu would fix anything. And anytime I was down or just needed a laugh, she was always there. I miss her spunky personality,” said Melissa Johnson, longtime PHS principal’s secretary.
Manville’s positivity and her love for everyone was always present. Walking into the main office, one could always feel the warmth and joy emanating from her. No matter who walked in–staff, student, or parent– she always cared, always understood, and always had a smile.
“I don’t think I ever saw her in a bad mood,” said Beth Johnson, a PHS special education teacher, “She was such a warm spirit and had such a love for all the kids. She was always joking around and found the best out of the worst. She was just a lighthearted, glass-half-full kind of person,”
“Her work ethic was always so great, and her way with people was, too. I miss being able to call the office and hear her voice,” said Debra Broom, a PHS earth/space science teacher. “She was such a big support in my life.”
Since her passing, the school has been different. It feels like there’s a void that can’t be filled, and things are just simply not the same, especially for the ones closest to her.
“She had worked as my secretary since she started at PHS. We became very close. She was like a sister to me, and our families became very close as well. She was such an angel, and I miss hearing her voice on my radio, and it’s been very hard for me to deal with her loss. So I try to focus on how she lived and not how she died,” said Timothy Kunstek, dean of students.
“Her passing has left a hole in my heart. I just feel like something is missing,” Broom said. “It’s a reminder to always tell your family and friends how much you love them; never take anyone for granted.”
Mrs. Brandy Manville thrived in what she did, and her charm and joy will never be replaced. She was an amazing mother, secretary, and friend. She will forever be missed at Portage High School.
