After more than a decade of effort, passion, and teamwork, the Portage High School choir has achieved what seemed out of reach: qualifying as a finalist for the state competition. Placing 16th in the state, this is the first time the group has reached this stage since 1990, making this moment a historic achievement and a source of pride for the entire community.
“We are very excited; it is a great privilege,” said Mr. Dollins, PHS choir director and teacher, who was visibly proud. “The last performance was incredible. For the first time in 35 years, we have come this far.”
But beyond the numbers, the teacher highlights something much more valuable: the students’ personal growth.
“The best part of working with them is seeing what they are best at and helping them become the best versions of themselves” Dollins said. We have fun, but they also know when to focus and work hard. That balance is what has brought us here.”
Doors Open to Talent
In addition to the choir, the PHS music department is also encouraging students to audition for the Choraliers, PHS’s show choir.
“Both groups are full of incredible people,” explained the teacher, highlighting the contagious energy shared during rehearsals. “Even if you’re new to performing, we have classes to help you. We always try to go further and support everyone who is curious and has the desire to grow.”
At Portage, the vision goes beyond singing and dancing. The choir and dance group are spaces where values are cultivated and teamwork is celebrated.
“We build people, not just singers,” Dollins said. “We have a history of progress and success, and we want to continue growing, seeking more people hungry to succeed.”
The journey to state is proof that with passion, discipline, and community, anything is possible. Portage High School isn’t just making history… it’s building the future.
